Mobile Usability

Using mobile websites and applications is different from websites and desktop applications. The main differences are:

  • Small screens
  • Input without mouse and keyboard
  • Longer loading times (even with 3G connection)
  • Multi Touch Control

Although there are design guidelines for mobile websites and applications, there is limited background experience on mobile usability available. Visitors of mobile websites are often confronted with considerable usability problems. Those problems can be identified easily in an usability test with participants of the real target group, and can be solved quickly and efficiently.

Mobile usability test under real circumstances

We test with the mobile devices of the participants in order to simulate the use-case of mobile sites and applications.

Usually, mobile phones are divided into three types: Feature Phone, Smart Phone and Touch Screen Phone. According to the target group, we recruit test participants who use this device type or a pre-defined group using different devices. Depending on test requirements, minimum screen sizes or specific mobile device types are taken into consideration in the selection process.

If a project is created only for one specific type, a test environment for only this model is done – for example, in the case of iPhone Applications.

Standard Phone

Smart Phone

Touch Screen Phone

The test participants are usually complete test via their normal network connection, not via local WLAN/WIFI – unless it is specifically required. Test facilities are checked for clear reception on the main networks. In case of a problem, we provide common charging devices and one mobile phone of each type.

Testing Mobile Solutions with Real Users

We test any website or application which can be accessed with a mobile devic with users in your target group.

  • Mobile Websites
  • Mobile Applications
  • Prototypes: As soon as a clickable prototype is available, we can a test directly with a mobile device.
  • Prototypes on Paper or Screen: Drafts, Concepts and Ideas for a starting page can be verified at an early stage in a so-called „Paper-Test“
The City Toru around the cathedral: on the Schiller Platz you can find one of the plates with the Semacode - and some of the sights: the Osteiner yard for example.

Conclusions gained from a Usability Test

You and your team can monitor the test participants through a one-way mirror and a monitor transmission of the mobile phone – an immediate experience motivating your team for optimization.

You will receive the results of the test in a written usability report:

  • All usability problems that have appeared with a priorisation for each problem.
  • Concrete recommendations on how to solve each problem.
  • Positive results are reported to ensure the good features are maintained.
  • Overall recommendations for further development of your mobile site.
  • Presentation of the results in front of your team and discussion.
